Virtual Reality Recruitment

Virtual reality recruitment (or VR recruitment) is a way of utilizing virtual reality to engage potential applicants to join an organization. It provides a more realistic and immersive look into an organization and can help people gain a better idea of what it would be like to join.

Virtual reality (VR) is an emerging technology that has already found successful application in a variety of different fields, including simulation, training, education, and gaming.

Pros & Cons

Here are the advantages of virtual reality recruitment.
  • Breaks geographical barriers
  • Saves time
  • Saves money
  • Reduces the time to hire
  • Gain competitive advantage
  • Hire the right candidate
  • Better experience for candidates
  • Reduces paperwork
  • A fairer recruitment process
Disadvantages
  • Technology issues
  • A high volume of applications
  • Too impersonal

Here are some companies that have given their hiring process a reality check.

  • Jaguar teamed up with the Gorillaz to build fun, skills-based recruiting games. Candidates using the app learn about the nuances of electric vehicles and play engaging but demanding code-breaking puzzles. According to Jaguar’s press release, these games “test their curiosity, persistence, lateral thinking and problem solving skills.” Those who perform exceptionally at the code-breaking games are fast-tracked through the recruiting process.
  • The British Army lets applicants experience tank-driving and other scenarios with VR. After offering VR experiences at events across the UK, the British Army saw its recruitment applications rise by 66%. Using a Samsung Gear VR headset, candidates can experience what it’s like to engage in missions including driving a tank, parachuting, and mountaineering. They can also virtually experience the challenges of combat training.
  • The US Navy has also seen an increase in leads since rolling out similar VR initiatives.
  • Intuit spent just 10 days creating a VR experience of its culture that students loved. Intuit has impressive headquarters in Mountain View, CA and a culture it is eager to share. Ahead of a design fair at the University of Washington, its team banded together to create a virtual experience of the company in just 10 working days.
  • General Mills uses VR to stand out at busy career events. Consumer food giant General Mills wants to make sure it gets noticed at careers fairs. So, it created a virtual tour of its headquarters to show applicants, and the response was huge.
  • Marriott experimented with experiential Facebook gaming in its recruiting drives. Finally, for something completely different, hotel chain Marriott once developed a Facebook game to let candidates experience the fast-paced environment of a Marriott kitchen.

As you discussed, organizations like the U.S. Navy, General Mills, and Jaguar have created the VR experiences to help drive their recruiting efforts and this is expected to continue growing as organizations find new and interesting ways to implement it and there is a global talk about this.
